The Prize of Geneva for human rights in psychiatry

Invitation to submit candidatures

The Geneva Prize for human rights in psychiatry is intended to acknowledge an individual, without any restriction of gender, age or nationality, or an institution with governmental or non-governmental status, for exceptional achievement at regional, national or international level in  :

  • promoting equity and the humane qualities of care for people with mental illness;
  • reducing the negative discrimination of the mentally ill;
  • defending the rights of people with mental illness and porting the application of ethical principles in psychiatric services.

The prize consists of a diploma, one medal and a monetary award of 20’000 Swiss francs. A winner receives the prize each 3 years, during the World Congress of psychiatry under the auspices of the Patron’s Committee and is accompanied by a press conference intended to publicize the work of the winner. A scientific or cultural event related to the goals of the Foundation may complete the presentation ceremony.

The price is funded by the State of Geneva through the Geneva University Hospitals and by the Swiss Federation of Psychiatrists and Psychotherapists.

Date of the awarding of the Prize to the laureate in Madrid (Spain) on September 2014, within the Congress of the World Psychiatric Association.

Guidelines concerning nominations : nominations for the Prize can be made by individuals, associations or institutions. Self-nominations (applications) will not be accepted.

Nominations should be accompanied by a typed application, in English or French. Applications should not exceed four pages of text. They should present the candidate - individual, group or institution - and describe how they have contributed to the achievement of the goals of the Foundation. The applications can be accompanied by up to three recommendations written by individuals familiar with the nominee’s work. Applications should also contain full contact information.

Nominations may be sent from now to the office of the foundation, but not later than March 31st 2014. All nominations will be examined by a special jury appointed by the Board of the Foundation.
